Western medicine is often seen as invasive, reactionary and only focused on the acute symptoms of an individual when compared to the more holistic approaches of eastern medicine. Naturopathy, an alternative medicine practice associated with holistic medicine, is in fact a European movement that was started in the late 19th century and has been widely accepted in the United States. Naturopathy’s insistence on allowing the body to heal itself has been steadily climbing in popularity in the United States and Canada and is increasingly seen as a positive alternative to medical practices that involve harsh drugs with side-effects and treatments that often make people as sick as the illness itself.

The modern form of Naturopathy as we know it begun in 1895 by Benedict Lust in New York. Based on his teachings a manifesto outlining Naturopathy’s principles has been put forth. It states Naturopathy’s goals are to:

1) provide health care that does no harm and presents the least risk to a patient.

2) Realize that the most potent healing power comes from within the body.

3) Treat the root causes of illness instead of the symptom

4) promote awareness about the powerful potential of the human body for healing

5) Take into consideration all of the factors that may be involved in an individual’s health
With its focus on the individual rather than on the symptom, Naturopathy advocates nutrition (whole foods diet, vegetarianism), lifestyle change (nature retreats), and other forms of alternative medicine such as acupuncture instead of invasive surgery or synthetic drugs. As a holistic medicine Naturopathy has been widely accepted in the United States. Various schools and programs exist to teach Naturopathy as a science and various licensed practitioners have set up practices all over the United States.

With its storied past, high rate of success and famous followers of the philosophy, Naturopathy has been one of the most successful forms of holistic medicine practiced in the United States.

Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of the Indian subcontinent, has steadily been increasing in popularity as a particularly effective alternative medicine as part of the holistic medicine movement. Ayurveda is very much in line with the stated goals of holistic medicine by focusing on creating a balance between the body’s mental, physical and spiritual faculties. Ayurveda is a combination of massage practices, natural hygienic products, and balanced living designed to increase longevity and prevent major illnesses. Many followers of Ayurveda also supplement their holistic approach with other non-traditional medical practices in order to increase vitality and prevent major diseases and reduce stress and anxiety.

Ayurveda focuses on maintaining the health of the five elements in the human body: plasma, blood, skin, fat, marrow and semen. By promoting vitality in all of these areas Ayurveda followers boast of increased life-spans and more active older years. Another major facet of Ayurveda is promoting greater metabolism and healthy digestion. The de-toxifying act of Panchakarma is designed to rid the body of toxins by a series of enemas, nasal therapy and enemas. While not widely practiced in the United States, practitioners of this Panchakarma share similarities to early 20th century Naturopathy nutritionists.

Aside from nutrition and health practices designed to promote a balanced health ecosystem, Ayurveda offers a variety of plant-based medicines and ointments that have distinct healing purposes. The world of alternative medicine has benefited greatly from some of these medicines. For example, many Ayurveda ointments are made out of sesame and sunflower oil whose linoliec oil has been found to possess powerful cancer fighting properties. Many followers of Ayurveda supplement their nutrition content with the intake of a variety of minerals.

Aside from the plant-based medicines, minerals and stress of balance in diet and nutrition Ayurveda is known for advocating physical regiments such as head massages, application of facemasks, foot massages and steamboxes in order to shape the body into peak physical condition.

While accepted practice in India, Ayurveda has yet to break into an American market but is slowly becoming more popular as the American and Indian markets become more intertwined.
